Well, the Volvo 700 series. Is it love, respect or just following a gut feeling regardless of what people tell you? Carlo Brantsen is simply a true Volvo 700 enthousiast.
OK, the 700 series isn’t really the paragon of beauty and sleek lines. There are more curves to be found in a Lego brick. Still these characteristic cars have a substantial following. To be honest, we don’t expect the mailbox of the 700 series fanclub to be overflowing with daily registrations, but still. There are people that see something special in these Volvo’s and that is a good thing. A beautiful thing. Since in the world of classics and youngtimers diversity is one of the greater goods. Carlo is a true fan of his 740. Adopted by him in the past, being a bit of a banger, the last few years the Volvo has received more love and affection any 740 will have ever received or get in the future. Although the 740 wasn’t actually the car he had always been looking for, Carlo did become a true Volvo adept. Maybe not the most common choice for a man with his background, but it proofs without a doubt that he knows how to survive the gossip. You have to be pretty self conscious to account for your love of the brick, when your day job has you surrounded by the most precious and exclusive vehicles in the world. The way Carlo revived the 740 is a great project that deserves a good deal of respect. Simply denying all the opinions he just followed his own route and did what seemed best. From banger to perfect.
Robustness is the first thing that springs to mind with many people when talking about the Volvo 740. An important aspect for those who value design and styling in a slightly different way. At the outset the 700 series was meant to succeed the aging 200 series, but in the end they were produced parallel for a long time. Various body styles were on offer, the saloon, of course there was a station wagon and lets not forget the Bertone styled coupe. With the introduction of the new 900 in the early nineties the sharp lines of the 700 series disappear. What remains is the boxy character of the car, a bit lumpier, not as tight as its predecessor. Talking about predecessors, when the 700 series is replaced by the 900 series, the station wagon of the 240 series is still in production…
Carlo belongs to the select company of Volvo 700 enthousiasts. Why he chose to restore the car in this meticulous way, he can’t really say. It’s just like that. The Volvo needed a substantial sum of many to be revived, economically not a very sound idea, but since he wanted to finish the job properly, it just happened. A bit wayward? Maybe, but when the possibility is there, why not take on the challenge? After all, when you look at the car a little closer, you will find a very comfy, well built, robust travel companion. No fuss, but enough of the modern gimmicks to enjoy both short and long journeys in all comfort. Since Carlo’s project has long been completed, a new foster child is added to his garage. Quite a special one, this time, since it is a transition model between the 700 and the 900 series. Beautiful? We’ll leave that to you.
