Since 1957 the world enjoys a charming little car, the Fiat 500. A car capable of putting a smile on everybody’s face.
The 500 is an iconic car and the standard ingredient to create a dolce vita feeling around the world. Even non-car-enthousiasts can’t help to take a picture whenever one of these adorable little cars is parked somewhere along a typical Italian lane. With the rebirth of the nuova Fiat 500, the Italian manufacturer even managed to enlarge the popularity of this second generation Fiat 500 from 1957.
Like so many, Judith Tiggelaar had a crush on the Fiat 500 since she was a little girl. The small car, here in Holland often lovingly nicknamed as backpack, could count on her everlasting love. A love partner Ivo couldn’t but tolerate, one day even presenting her with a little Fiat of her own. This inseparable trio has since been a welcome guest to the active and very lively Dutch Fiat 500 scene. Touring together, detailing, tuning and enjoying, what a lovely threesome.
‘Economical to use, fast and safe to drive’, a line from the original Fiat 500D brochure. Unthinkable to contemporary standards, but one day this was the sales pitch for the Fiat 500. Not without success. From 1957 until 1975 the car has been manufactured in several varieties. Like it was used by other factories and coach builders to create the most beautiful creations. Elegant Autobianchi Bianchina’s, sporty Abarths and Steyr-Puchs, but coach builders like for instance Zagato and Vignale did use the Fiat 500 as a base for their own beautiful creations.
Through the years Judith’s 500 has been lovingly pampered. Although Ivo had a hard time to understand his girl’s love for the charming little car in the beginning, today he is under the influence of the Fiat-500-virus every bit as much as she is. A feeling many people share with them, it is hard to find someone who doesn’t have a soft spot for these cars. Whether a Fiat 500 is stock of highly tuned, completely restored or rusty and beat, the person driving it will always have the broadest smile on their face. The same smile people have when they see one parked or driving by. The Fiat 500 made the world a lot happier. I wish there were more of those!
