It’s Magnum PI, well no, but it is a Ferrari 308 GTS like featured on the television series. Meet Mike Salomon and his stunning little Ferrari. This is CineCars South Africa!
Mike Salomon’s love for classic cars dates back to his childhood. In particular the appeal of the extravagant cars of television series from the early eighties. KITT from the Knight Rider, the A-team van and of course the Ferrari 308 GTS from Magnum PI. This and the matchbox cars that came with it had an enormous attraction on the young Mike. He will spend hours doodling sketches of the air duct in the flank of his favorite Ferrari, one of the design cues that still intrigue him today.
Having that same type of Ferrari in his collection on full scale today, is to Mike the ultimate proof that dreams can come true. His growing collection of eighties sports cars leaves no doubt about that. Some of his cars are even a little older. The main thing is, that Mike loves the simplicity, the innocence even, of that period in time. Great engineering, pure, sometimes raw and edgy, but always honest. No mass production, no robots. These cars are hand built. This you can see, feel and sense. And yes, that does mean they are not always perfect, but isn’t that what makes real beauty?
It is this passion for engineering and design that is depicted by cinematographer Jason Bronkhorst, our man at CineCars South Africa. The love for the soul of the product brings these gentlemen together. Cars like these are best compared to art. You don’t buy them to invest, you are touched by it, touched beyond your most profound being. A feeling shared by so many car enthousiast around the world. A feeling that goes beyond that one car, beyond the financial picture, and, in most cases, is extremely addictive. Dreams that have to come true, whatever the cost.
Jason Bronkhorst is the man behind Traffic Magazine, his own multi media magazine, and the new man at the most Southern branch of our ever expanding community, CineCars South Africa.
