Lately Marcel Romijn joined a classic car rally for charity celebrating its 10th edition. It turned out to be an event with unexpected highlights.
Taking part in classic car rallies in itself is a fantastic way to enjoy your motorvehicle. You get to navigate scenic routes and before and after there is usually enough time to enjoy the other vehicles that are participating. Talking about the shared experience of driving and the preparing the route of the day, are perfect conversation starters for even the shyest of persons. Driving in a convoy with other cars, hearing the sounds of your car combined with the sounds and smells of other classics just adds to the fun. Another added bonus for many is, that where one classic car gets noticed by the public and every now and then gets a thumbs-up, the effect of a whole bunch of classics passing by or gathered in a parking lot is clearly more impressive. If the group of cars consists of a wide variety there is a favorite for everyone.
The classic car rally Go!Wheels celebrates its 10th edition in 2018. Besides the rally this event consists of a car show open for the public, as the participants cars are parked up for display in the city center of the small town of Geldermalsen. The added bonus to many people having a great time however, is that this is a rally for charity. Accompanied by the slogan ‘driving for a cause’ this 10th edition the organization pulls off a new record and manages to collect 10.000 euro each for the three charities (from local to global) chosen. This particular edition gatheres 130 cars, making the field incredibly diverse. From a BMW i8 and a brand new Ferrari to a 1970’s Ford Transit and a 1930’s Packard. A mid engined Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 should not to be forgotten.
The organisation also pulls off to secure a visit to private car museum Metropole in Druten as a resting point during the route. This collection which usually is not accessible to the public exists of some wonderful cars, which like the rally itself show a large degree of diversity. Here we are thinking that we were going to drive a car rally, instead we are talking to an audience about our own cars. Sharing the enthousiasm, wandering around the parking lot enjoying one beautiful car after the other, when we unexpectedly are being exposed to a magnificent private collection. What a fantastic experience! You could only wish I knew about this treat upfront so I could have brought my camera instead having to take phone pictures. So be it, enjoy the pictures and remember, there is no way of enjoying a classic car than by driving them as long as we still can!
